The corm is edible.
Perennial herb, solitary or several-clustered, 10-40 cm tall, with stems erect, arising from small globose corm covered by fibrous-netted coats, 1-2.5 cm in diameter. Leaves usually 2, basal, linear, up to 45 cm, longer than flowers, or scapes, sickle-shaped, leathery, rounded at back. Raceme 2-4 flowered, short-pedicelled, spathe scarious, inflated, acuminate. Flower 2-4 cm long. Perianth with violet-blue base and purplish-white or yellow apex. Anther 7-9 mm long, filaments 7-10 mm long. Ovary with a long, slender beak, Style 4-6 mm long, with 2-petaloid stylar branches, 1-2.5 cm long, stigma bilobed. Capsule 1.5-4 cm long, ellipsoid. Seeds 2-3 mm long, ovoid or ellipsoid, compressed, yellowish-brown. Flowering from February to March.
