edible flower buds. Powdered leaves mixed with oil used as ear drops. Leaves mixed with leaves of rhyza stricta used to treat diabetes. Root bark and leaves used to treat cough, worms, gout, rheumatism, and as a general tonic. Flower buds as disinfectant and diuretic. Fruits have high content of vitamin C and are eaten to prevent scurvy. Powdered fruits mixed with honey taken to treat sciatica. Seeds taken to treat feminine fertility and menstruation pains. Crushed seeds applied to ulcers and skin diseases.

spiny, scrambling shrub, 20-80 cm high and up to 1 meter across, sparsely short pubescent. stems erect or sscending, straight or zigzag, divaricately beanched from woody thickened rootstock. Leaves orbicular to ovate, not fleshy, spiny-tipped, glabrous or sometimes white-tomentose, 1-4 cm long, and wide. Stipules hooked spines, 3-5 mm long. Flowers showy, large. Sepals subequal oblong or ovate, 1-2.5 cm long, 5-9 mm wide. Petals white broadly ovate, short-clawed, 2-3.5 cm long, 1-1.5 cm wide. Stamens numerous, slender usually purplish above, 2-5 cm long. Fruit a berry, oblong-obovoid, striped, 2-3 cm long, opening by valves from the apex, many seeded and pulpy.
