Roots boiled in water ingested to relieve painful joints, combat fever and as a diuretic. Roots any young shoots also used to stop bleeding. Grazed by livestock.
Perennial, stems erect from 10-100 cm. Leaves linear, flat, 0.3-20* 3-100 cm. Inflorescence cylindrical, terminal, dense, white-hairy up to 20 cm long. Paired spikelets, one with stalk and one without stalk, each up to 0.4 cm long with 3 hair-like appendages (awns), and sur-rounded with silky white hairs. Flowering from February to May.
