Annual, stems slender, erect, up to 25 cm, usually unbranched, hairy. Leaves deeply dissected into linear lobes, 3-5 cm long, toothed edges. Lower leaves with long stalk, upper leaves without stalk. Flower dark violet-purple with dark center, c. 4 cm across, 4 petals, falling off easily. Fruit a 3-valved cylindrical capsule, 0.2-0.3* 2.5-7.5 cm long, with stiff white hairs. Flowering from February to April.
