Spiny shrub, 20-70 cm high, branching from base and above, old bark brownish to dark gray; stems and branches densely furnished with persistent alternate spines to 5 cm long. Leaves of tow kinds; those of the young shoots large, usually 1-2 pairs of obovate leaflets on upper side of young spines, 4-9 mm long and 3-6 mm broad, hairy to glabrous; those on the old wood reduced to fascicles of 2-5 cuneate- obovate leaflets. Flowers solitary on short pedicel, 1-2 mm long. Bract oval, hairy, 3-4 mm long. Calyx 9-12 nerved, hairy; calyx tube soon inflated in fruit becoming membranous and glabrescent, 12-20 mm long. Corolla white, pink-tinged above; standard 15-22 mm long, oval to oblong, emarginate. pod stiptate, ovoid, yellowish, and hairy with shorter, straight and rigid beak included in the inflated calyx. Seeds ovoid, not smooth, 3-4 mm in diameter.

Flowering from February to April.
Dry stony foothills and gravelly soil.
